What I Saw In 2010, My Photo Diary (#Canadian #Photojournalism)
Edmonton - May 16, 2010 - A swelling of community support is paying for two-year-old Maddox Flynn to have surgery in New York on Friday for a severe facial malformation that has affected him since birth. Update: Maddox has over 1100 friends on his Facebook group and Within eight days of the Canadian public learning about Maddox and his operations earlier this year, donations of about $175,000 were made. The family says they will donate the remainder of the money to help other children in need.
In 2010 I witnessed the spirit of community. I saw people from across Canada coming together to the aid of a young boy in need. I saw a battle of David vs Goliath as a small town tried to protect themselves from the effects of alleged harmful fumes from large oil development. And I travelled across the continent to a new home in New York City. I'm thankful to all those who allowed me passage into their lives, even for a brief 1/250 of a second of time.
I'm also thankful to my loving wife Tiffany who supports my passion for story-telling. I'm thankful to all my great colleagues in Edmonton and to my colleagues with Rogue Collective. I was able to share stories and do what I love due in part to people like Neil Smalian at the Edmonton Journal, clients and friends Richard Cairney and Jennifer Rolfe, and all the great editors at the Globe and Mail including Moe Doiron, Dave Lucas, Roger Hallett, Tim McKenna, and Randall Moore. And I truly thank all of you who have taken the time to visit and comment on my journey.
I hope that in 2011 I'll be able to show the same kindness and support to this great profession of photojournalism.
