Portrait of John Hamburg, writer for Zoolander, whose Blue Steel Changed Portrait Photography
I came out and told John Hamburg that his character's use of the Blue Steel pose has changed portrait photography. This moniker rings easily with so many of my subjects. I don't necessarily bring it up, but many of them have offered to give me the look. I'll get these senior executives of high profile companies asking, "Do you want me to do the Blue Steel?"
I didn't ask John to do the Blue Steel. But I did ask about his photography collection including a beautiful Weegee. All his photos in his home were beautifully hand custom framed by an old frame maker. We spoke about how every great work needs the finishing touch and once fully composed with all its parts is it then ready to be enjoyed. We talked about Canadian comedians, SCTV and how short actors were.
Well, actually I mentioned to him how I had just spoken with Salman Rushdie about how short celebrities were. And that after doing my research on Mr. Hamburg, I thought he was a giant after seeing him posing with Ben Stiller. Not realizing how really short Ben Stiller is.
The Technical Stuff: Photos shot with my Nikon D3S and three lenses: 50 1.4 G, 70-200 and my 14-24 mm. I used a shoot thru umbrella using an SB900 speedlight for fill light.
